Your Action is Urgently Needed

MAY REVISE BUDGET INFO:

Our advocacy has profoundly impacted public opinion and forced Governor Schwarzenegger and legislators to explore alternatives to the drastic cuts proposed to education in January.

·While somewhat improved from the January proposed budget, the Governor's "May Revise" falls $4 billion short of the workload budget for K-12 education (the amount needed to maintain existing programs) and contains severe cuts to children's healthcare and other support services. The May Revise hinges on a controversial plan to borrow money from future revenues of an expanded state lottery or implement a temporary 1% sales tax increase.

NEXT STEPS

The May Revise contained the updated revenue projections needed to begin the real budget-making process, and with the June primary behind us, budget negotiations will now begin in earnest.  This is the most critical stage of the budget process, and a time when back room deals will take place that can have serious long-term budget and policy consequences.

We need to let our legislators know that although school is ending, WE WILL CONTINUE WATCHING THEM over the summer and will accept nothing less than what is best for our children and the 6 million others in California's public schools.

Please take a moment to mail or fax May Revise letters to your legislators (available on this website) and continue to call them and let them know you do not want to see cuts to education and children's services.  They are YOUR representatives in Sacramento.  Please hold them accountable for representing YOUR interests.

Please check back periodically over the summer for budget updates.  If you are a PTA member and would like to be notified of state budget progress or when your action is needed, please email Ninth District Legislation VP Lorene Joosten at Ninth-D-PTA-Leg@san.rr.com.
